Berniel Watkins Obituary

Berniel McKell Thayne Lund Watkins

1921 ~ 2022

It is with great sorrow that we had to say goodbye to our amazing mother the morning of March 10, 2022 at the age of 100.

Berniel was born in Ogden, Utah on May 29, 1921 to Rodney and Bernice McKell but spent most of her life in Salt Lake City.

Berniel met her first love and husband, Bill Thayne, at BYU. Together they had 4 children: Rodney, Gary, Shauna, and Gina. After Bill's untimely death in 1965 she then married Ken Lund and they had incredible compatibility for 29 years. After his passing she married Scott Watkins who was a childhood friend of Bill's and they had 11 wonderful years together until his passing.

She was part of the greatest generation. She was a collector of beautiful treasures and always had a beautiful home in which to display them.

Playing bridge and getting her hair done weekly was a big part of her life for years and she was a class act for sure!

She was living most recently at the home of her son and daughter -in-law, Gary and Kathie Thayne in St. George, Utah where she peacefully passed away.

Berniel is preceded in death by her parents, 3 husbands, and oldest son, Rodney.

She is survived by her 3 children: Gary (Kathie) Thayne, Shauna (Rand) McCullough, Gina (Don) Petersen, 9 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren.

The family asks that instead of sending flowers please plant them in your garden this spring in her honor. And....go Jazz! She loved to watch them.

A graveside service for family and friends will be Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at 11 am Wasatch Lawn 3401 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah

I sure loved this lady. My first memory was selling light bulbs as kid for some school fundraiser going door to door and meeting her. I remember being very impressed with her perfectly manicured garden and beautiful rod iron gate. We went to her stunning home and looked at her incredible doll collection along with the beautiful Remington statues. Her house was like a beautiful museum. I also remember her gorgeous Mercedes´ SL and that AMC eagle that was perfect and meticulous. She must have had that car for 30 plus years and it looked new every time I saw it.
The last time I saw her was at my Grandpa Mel´s funeral in 2016. She had the same spunk, the same class, and the same energy she had when I was a kid. She told me they called my Grandpa Minnie. (Probably because he was such a goodie goodie:-). Anyhow, I have a lot of fond memories of this special lady and I´ll miss her. I´m sorry for your loss. What a lady!
