Back in 1977 Matlock invited my dad (John McLaughlin) and I to stay at his place in Denton while we were showing in the area. Matlock was one of the few people who ever actually took time to teach me the finer points of cutting. I learned more in that one week with Matlock than all the other so called instructors combined. Matlock not only helped teach me the finer points of cutting, but also fed us and kept our horses stalled. And you're right, he would not take a dime for any of it. He also...

the horse & cattle industry truly lost a great freind & mentor. my fondest memories were of sitting w/ matlock & jack cheaney eating cantalope, in back of cheaney's saddle shop listening to the stories & learning from the advise & experiences of this fine man. he will be greatly missed!

I just learned of Matlock's passing.... and my thoughts immediately went to the many hours of pleasure I had just listening and learning from him and his dear friend Leo Huff talk horses. Now they will be able to once again ride together the ulitmate trail of Eternity. God's speed Matlock, you will be greatly missed.

LaVerne,
I hope this guest book shows you how many people were touched by Matlock. I heard the service was really special. We are thinking about you.

Easter Sunday about 5 yrs. ago I stopped into the Ranch to check out the new neighbors who were obviously into cutting! I had a Mirada bred colt needing some training and asked this beautiful silver gray haired lady who was out walkin' up to the road if she happened to know a good cutting horse trainer around!? She invited me up to the house and the rest is history. When a man like Matlock rides your horse and tells you you've got somethin here ... I'll never forget all that he taught me,...

My heart is heavy for your loss. My prayers are with you all. It was many years ago, but Matlock was one of my dad's best friends and he has always had a special place in my heart. My mom and dad (Bill and Mary K. Yeary) thought the absolute world of Matlock. The world will miss him and all "horse sense" and all of his stories. God bless you all.
