Peters Funeral Home - Cotulla Obituary

It is with much sorrow and deep sadness that we must announce the passing of Betty Louise Gulley Avant, age 79, who passed away peacefully, but unexpectedly on the morning of September 15, 2024.  She was born in Medina County, TX on October 26, 1944, to parents Charles “Charlie” Gulley Sr. and Eunice Stracener Gulley.

Betty was a graduate of Cotulla High School and Texas A&I University. After college, Betty married her high school sweetheart, Darwin Dee Avant of Cotulla, TX on February 13, 1966. In their early years of marriage, they lived in Kingsville, TX and in the Austin, TX area, before finally settling back home in the Cotulla, TX area in 1980 where they raised two children, Dale and Scott and had a loving family together.

Our physical world lost an AMAZING wife, mom, grandmother, teacher, and dear friend; but heaven gained a beautiful angel! She gave her heart to her family, friends and the thousands of children whose hearts she touched from her many years of teaching in Cotulla ISD.  She saw the best in everyone and every situation; and never missed an opportunity to spend time with family.  Betty was one of the sweetest and most loving creatures to walk on this earth and we are all the better for having loved, held, and known her.

Betty is survived by her husband Darwin Avant; her children Dale L. Avant (wife Roxie) and Scott G. Avant (wife Claudia), her grandchildren Amanda Avant Morris (husband Trey), Scott G. Avant II, Abigail “Abi” Elizabeth Avant, and Tristen Renee Avant; her new baby great granddaughter Audrey Elain Morris; her sisters-in-law Billie Dean Gulley and Alma “June” Avant Hooper; her cousin who became and was loved like a sister Doris Baker Park, and many other treasured nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Betty was preceded in death by her loving parents; her three brothers Calvin (wife Tillie) Gulley, Bill (wife Lahoma) Gulley and Charles “Cotton” Gulley Jr.; and her sister Clara Edith Gulley (husband Roger) Jones.

Betty lived a wonderful, beautiful life, and we invite you to join her family and friends at the “Betty Gulley Avant” Cotulla ISD Cafetorium located on the Cotulla High School campus at 1034 TX-97, Cotulla, TX 78014 on Saturday, September 28th, at 1:30 PM to help us celebrate her life.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the Millett Cemetery at 777 East FM 469, Cotulla, TX. 78014.

Not sure what to say?

I’ve been blessed with many fantastic teachers, but none have had a greater impact on me than Betty Avant. For six straight years, from seventh through twelfth grade, I spent first period with Mrs. Avant, learning speech and theater. Even today, when I stand before large groups in important military settings, I still remember her advice to scrunch my toes to ease my nerves—advice that worked then and still works now!

But Mrs. Avant was so much more than just a speech and theater...

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

I have never known anyone with a more caring, compassionate heart than Betty's; have never known a teacher any more devoted to her students; and have never known an individual so full of selfless love for family and friends. Truly, Betty's life was a life well-lived!

I admired and enjoyed Betty during our days at Cotulla High School. She was also encouraging and thoughtful while we prepared as cheerleaders to cheer on our Cowboys. Through the years, when I would come to Cotulla and saw her, it was always a warm hug that she greeted me with. I will always remember Betty with warm thoughts for the contributions she made to the Cotulla community.

My condolences to Darwin and family. May you find peace in feeling the joy and love she shared...

Single Tree

Betty and I went to school together in Millett and later in Dilley. The Gulley and Casto families have known each other as neighbors and friends for over 100 years. Betty knew and had a deep appreciation of this history and I was always thankful for the special invitations she sent me to the reunions of the Gulley family. There is an old saying that "it's not what you take with you when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go." Betty left a legacy of love...

You were so loved Aunt Betty , I am going to miss you and the letters we would write to each other
