Aunt Betty was proud of her pioneer family. Her maternal grandfather Clement Vermeire left Belgium in 1898 and came to Oregon. He returned to Belgium and brought his family back to eastern Oregon about 1904. In 1906 his wife Josephine Vermeire died in a typhoid epidemic. The children Rene, Henry, Margarita, and Aunt Betty's mother Mary were all born in Belgium.
