Bill Scott

Obituary

SEATTLE (AP) - Bill Scott, who entertained Seattle sports crowds as "Bill the Beerman" and later worked as a professional cheerleader and superfan across the country, died Sunday. He was 58.

Scott died after battling colon cancer for more than five years, wife Katherine Olason said.

Scott became a Seattle sports fixture in the days when the drab Kingdome hosted the deafening crowds of fans supporting the NFL's Seahawks.

As a beer vendor, Scott's booming voice would both coax customers and encourage fans to cheer. "Freeze your teeth, and give your tongue a sleigh ride," was among his memorable sales pitches.

In the 1980s, Scott dropped the beer tray and took up cheerleading for a living, although he had a different name for the job: "synergy facilitation."

Scott was later imported to work the crowd for the NBA's Portland Trailblazers, and the Boise Hawks, a minor-league baseball franchise.

He eventually branched out, working across the country for the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, the Continental Basketball Association and other minor-league baseball parks.

Not sure what to say?

Bill was a U. S. Air Force Vetern. He was stationed on Okinawa in 1971.

I love you grandpa bill I didn't know you very well but you were an awesome grandpa

Yesterday my wife was going through my baseball stuff from when I was a kid. She asked me "Who is Bill Scott the beerman". I explained to her it was my baseball glove autographed by Bill. It brought back great memories of the kingdome with my Dad of low scoring mariner days. Today I live in Houston Texas and took my Son to the Mariner vs. Astros game in Houston and had a great time with him. Bill you were a pioneer. Thanks for the memories and the I've got ice cold beer here.

I had the good fortune of meeting Bill and getting to know him during the late '80's (Blazer Bill as we called him then) when he was moonlighting as a "synergy facilitator" with the Quad City Thunder and other CBA basketball teams throughout the midwest.

He was one of the most engaging and likeable guys I have ever met. He made old historic Wharton Field House in Moline reverberate with noise as he organized and led the fans in cheerig their Thunder. He especially enjoyed leading...

I first met Bill the Beer Man in '80/ '81 when he and I did a couple weekend promotions for Moosehead Beer. He ws a kind and gentle man who made friends easily. He never forgot me. If he saw me at a game I would hear "Who shot JR?!!"
He is and always will be missed. My prayers are with the Scott family.

Anyone who spent time in the Dome should remember Bill. I will never forget his signature "give your tongue a sleigh ride." He is mentioned a few times in my upcoming Seahawk history book.

Bill came to our high school in 1980 and led the whole school in a pep assembly that was awesome. Over 25 years later I still remember what it meant to our school. Thanks Bill save a cold one for me!

I have been a long time Seahawk fan. Bill the Beer man Scott was the inspiration for what is now the 12th man.I encourage everyone to contact the Seahawks to have the 12th man flag raising in his name sometime this season !! This is a must!! He brought me to another level as a fan and will never forget that!! sincerely Robert ( Bob) Methe

I remember Bill very well from my time at Mariners, Sounders and Sonics games. He and Rick the Peanut Man always brought smiles to the faces of children and adults alike. I'm sure he's sadly missed.
