VIDOR, Texas (AP) — Singer Billie Jo Spears, whose performance of "Blanket on the Ground" went No. 1 on the country charts in 1975, has died at age 73.

A funeral home spokesman confirmed her death Wednesday evening. Carl Willis of R.S. Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee had no details.

The Orange Leader newspaper in Texas reported that she died Wednesday morning at her home in Vidor, 85 miles northeast of Houston. No cause of death was stated.

The Beaumont native was voted most promising female vocalist by the Academy of Country Music in 1976.

Her other hits included "Mr. Walker, It's All Over" in 1969; "What I've Got in Mind" in 1976; "Misty Blue" in 1976; and "If You Want Me" in 1977.

Today, on my way to work, Charlie Monk played If You Love Me on Willies Roadhouse and my heart skipped a beat. As soon as I heard Billie Jo, I was transported back to a special time in my life. As a young girl in the early to mid 70s, Billie Jo was a dear friend to my family. My father, Duke Snow was a local C&W entertainer in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. that is my grand ma and i love and miss her and cant wait to see her when i get up there i am reminded of her everyday always get told i look like her which is the best blessing some one could ever want or plead for .

I had no idea Billie Jo had passed away. Saw her many times on UK TV and thought she was such a lovely, bubbly, classy lady. Loved her music. Such a shame - but her music goes on.
