Thanks for your kind words about my father. The gathering to celebrate his life was very uplifting. I'm so happy that he had so many friends - old and new - who enjoyed his company. We heard many funny stories about Dad and his humor.

I met Bill when we were stationed with the Navy in Memphis, Tennessee. We worked in the same office as typists. We became good friends, and I took him to Van, Texas, to meet my folks - his engaging personality made them like him immediately.

Sometime after we were discharged, we renewed our friendship in Dallas where we had both moved. He introduced me to my wife of almost 54 years - and I will always be grateful for that.

I met Bill when I was about thirteen - my brother Virgil Bullard (who was stationed with Bill in the Navy) brought him to visit my family - probably 1949. I thought he was the best looking guy I'd ever seen (as did my mother). He asked me once: "Becky, do you think I am cute?" I was startled but managed to say, "No, I don't think you're cute; I think you are good looking."

As a friend of Bill's daughter Susan, I always looked forward to visiting with Bill and Connie. I knew that Bill would crack me up, and Connie would make us some of her strawberry lemonade. Bill was such fun to be around. His dry wit and take on life was so entertaining. When I remember "Mr. Lane", it will be as him laying in his hamick at the lake house, a cool drink in his hand and this smile on his face - a kind of smirk, like he is getting ready to play a joke or trick on you.
