Since learning of his illness 18 months ago, Blaise spoke to me often about his love for his job and his fellow workers. He took great satisfaction in performing his job and in his association with his fellow employees, at all levels. Having to retire for health reasons was emotionally painful for Blaise.

Balise had several circles of friends: those with whom he grew up, those from the NOAC, and those from his job...and perhaps others. I know he loved all of you as he spoke of this frequently. Having known Blaise since age six or seven, I cannot imagine a better friend. He was always there if you needed him, and sometimes even if you didn't need him. He gave his friendship and love unconditionally, without hidden agendas or selfish motives. He forgave or ignored the failings of others, the bonds of friendship trumping all else. The many gatherings with his friends over the past year may have been the best medicine, for Blaise and us alike.

While Blaise knew well the grim prognosis for his disease, he bravely endured difficult medical treatments to delay its progress. I never heard him complain about his situation, and he never wavered in his commitment to fight. I know he was grateful to his many medical caretakers for their efforts on his behalf.

As for his family, the past year and one half have been difficult. I know you all know how much he loved each of you and how hard he fought to stay with you longer. His sudden and unexpected passing has been a stunning blow. Please take comfort in knowing that Blaise had faith that he was ultimately going to a better place. Everyone is praying for you and Blaise.
