Quick Snell

Bluma Beatrice Quick Snell, 87, died Friday, October 10, 2008, in Norfolk. A long-time resident of Afton, and later Charlottesville, she was born in Nellysford, Virginia, to the late Robert George and Etta Campbell Quick.

She was a graduate of Rockfish Valley High School and Dunsmore Business College. Mrs. Snell greatly enjoyed her many years of service in the Materials Science Department in the School of Engineering at University of Virginia.

In the early 1960's she managed the office for Dr. Robert Raynor, when he began his medical practice in the Rockfish Valley. A member of Broaddus Memorial Baptist Church, in Charlottesville, she had been active in their Senior Choir. Upon moving to Virginia Beach in 2005, she took great pleasure in being part of the "Young at Heart" choir at First Baptist Church in Norfolk. An avid traveler, she toured almost all of the United States and Canada, the Caribbean, all of Europe and several cities in Russia, and loved looking through her photos of past trips. She often remarked that before anyone could say, "let's go" she would be in the car. And all who knew her will agree that she never missed an opportunity to stop and shop.

Mrs. Snell was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Christian Snell, as well as all 10 of her brothers and sisters, Medford George Quick, Helen Virginia Wood, Robert Eldridge Quick, Randolph George Quick, Hazel Etta Quick, Buddy Corbett Quick, Kemper Campbell Quick, Sally Elizabeth Irvine, Calvin Coolidge Quick, Evelyn Dawn Kent.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Snell Billy, and two grandsons, John Christian Billy and Stephen Ryan Billy, all of Virginia Beach; a sister-in-law, Mattie Davis Quick of Waynesboro, and numerous nieces and nephews on both the Quick and Snell sides of her family of whom she was very fond, as well as many dear friends in Afton, Charlottesville and Virginia Beach.

In keeping with the wishes of her family there will be no public visitation.

A private graveside service will be held on Monday, October 13, 2008, at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery in Afton.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Hebron Baptist Church, 66 Tanbark Rd., Afton, VA 22920, Broaddus Memorial Baptist Church, 1525 Stony Point Rd., Charlottesville, VA 22911 or the Kempsville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 62345, Virginia Beach, VA 23466.

Relatives and friends are invited to share condolences and memories with the family www.reynoldsfuneralservices.com.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 West Main Street.

Not sure what to say?

I knew Bluma from the time I was born. Ernest and my dad, Aspen Lee, were army buddies, and I remember well our many visits with Bluma, Ernest, and Sandy in Afton when I was young. I stayed in touch with Bluma via the computer when she was in Charlottesville, and by phone when she was in Virginia Beach. Bluma was always so much fun! We had many laughs over the years. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of the times that the army buddies and their families would get together. ...

I worked with Bluma in MSE and kept in touch with her until she moved to VA Beach. She was a very special lady and I will miss her.

I stayed at cousin Bluma and Ernest's big house as a little girl and played with my other cousins staying there. Ernest's Dad, Sam, was my granddaddy Lewis Snell's brother. I spoke to Bluma on the phone, Betty Wine helped, around 2003?, so she could talk to my Mom who was ailing. She brightened up my Mom, Gladys Snell Farrar Altice so much and they giggled on the phone about their Afton, Virginia days! I appreciated seeing my Mom so happy to talk to her. I wish I could have known her...

Aunt Bluma was a wonderful lady and will be greatly missed.

I am a cousin of Bluma's on the
Quick side. My Dad (Thomas) and
Bluma were first cousins. My
granddad was Thomas Quick Sr. I
met Bluma for the first time when
Aunt Sally died. I remember seeing
her and saying to my Mom, that
lady looks just like Robbie (my aunt).
My Dad took me over and introduced
us. Bluma said, I'm the Quick who
married a Snell (snail). I of course
laughed. After I moved back to
the C'ville area in 1994, I ran into
Bluma a few...

Bluma was a friend to all, always had a kind word and a happy outlook on life. I remember her fondly from working with her for several years in the Materials Science Department. My thoughts are with her family at this time.

Aunt Bluma, we love and miss you. Our prayers are with you.

She was a lovely lady.
