Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory - Shelby Obituary


Mr. Bobby Irvin Spake, age 91, passed away on July 5, 2017. Born in Cleveland County on January 5, 1926, he was the son of the late Andrew Jackson Spake and Mattie Sheppard Spake.


He attended Shelby High School and graduated from Waco High School after serving in the US Navy from 1944 until 1946 during World War II. He worked at Shelby Hudson Hosiery, was a building contractor and in 1963 started Spake Concrete Products, Inc. Bobby was an active, lifelong member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. He enjoyed music and playing his harmonica, playing golf and especially loved spending time with his family and friends.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Everette Spake, Wesley Spake and Charles Spake, two sisters, Ruth Spake and Elizabeth Smith, three sisters-in law, Mildred Spake, Edith Spake and Mabel Jones and three brothers-in-law, Ronald E. Smith, J. Don Shields and Dr. Robert S. Jones, Sr., all of Shelby.


He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Faye Sperling Spake, a son, Dan Spake and wife Mary Lu, a daughter, Pam Williams and husband Mike, all of Shelby, grandchildren, Mary Ann Guthrie and husband Todd of Charlotte, Beth Fulmer and husband Danny of Hendersonville, David Spake and wife Katie of Belmont, Sarah Piercy and husband Cliff of Boiling Springs and Michael Williams of Shelby, two brothers, John Spake and Henry Spake of Shelby, one sister, Jane Shields of Shelby, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Ruth Wilson of Shelby and Glenn and Ruby Sperling of Waco and many nephews, nieces and friends.


Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7 at Elizabeth Baptist Church with Dr. Rit Varriale and Rev. Clinton Padgett officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. before the service. Private burial will follow in the church cemetery.
