Not sure what to say?

Dear Jane, Fontaine, and Rhodes,
I only just learned today of Bogie's death. I was am so sad for all who knew him and especially for you. My heart and prayers go out to you at this time. Fontaine, I wish that I had known because I would've loved to have been there for you and to have seen you after all these years. I have very fond memories of being a young girl and being your friend. Your parents loved to entertain and we were always included in the food preparation. I learned about...

I love the picture of Uncle Bogie! This is very much how I remember him...tall, curly hair, smiling and handsome. I remember my brother being called "Bogie" when we were little until he reached school age and the teachers insisted on using the name on their role. I thought it was fun to have a brother and an uncle with the same name. I remember having a great time playing on the dock behind Uncle Bogie's house and I remember that on one visit I was just getting over the chicken pox and so I...

Dear Jane, Rhodes, and Maury
Paul just forwarded news of Bogie's death to me. He was a down-to-earth and good guy. I know you will miss him, as you miss Pascha. Apologize for not writing you when she passed away. This email messaging to express condolences is new to me. Seems so impersonal on one hand, and so immediate on the other. I have such fond memories of all of you. Hope to see you sometime. A trip to Savannah is on my list for next winter. With deep sympathy and warm regards,...

Bogie's trademark kindness, generosity and good humor will be missed. Thank you Mrs. Werth, Fontaine and Rhodes for sharing him. Our prayers are with you. A great many people now mourn with the Werth family. However, we also join together to celebrate his life and to treasure his unique and special place in our own lives.

Bogie was such a nice man. He was my family's next door neighbor in Ilse of Hope. He had a garden and would always share his enormous vegetables. He was funny and sweet. My deepest sympathies to his loved ones.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
A moment of silence please.

I remember Uncle Bogie best from my days as a kid. We would visit during the summer time. He was a great, fun, man’s man who gave us adventurous vacations while visiting...putting on mud boots up to our knees to wade out into the river, going on his speedboat, and swimming behind his house. With my middle name being Bogardus, I always knew I had a part of Uncle Bogie in my name. My wife and I love and respect the sentiment of family names; having had two daughters, the plan to name my son...

Dad (Carter) wrote his family an explanation of the picture in the photo gallery of Bogie, Carter and brother Herndon. The story says so much about Uncle Bogie that I thought it should be shared with everyone.

Carter writes, "Bogie came up to St. Andrew's as a surrogate father for Herndon and me during Fathers' Day Weekend. It was our sophomore year in 1949. It was a large headache for him to come from Stanardsville, VA. That was before I-66 and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and...

Fathers Day at St. Andrews

Carter always spoke so fondly of "Brother Bogie" that it came naturally to name our first-born child, a son, John Bogardus Werth and to call him "Bogie." Of course, this was also a tribute to their mother, Pauline Bogardus, and her brother who was called Bogie. When our Bogie entered elementary school, the teachers preferred his "formal" name and our Bogie became John. Nevertheless, John is very proud of his Bogardus middle name, and it is a shame distance meant he knew his namesake uncle...
