Boyd Springer Obituary

Boyd J. Springer, 66, died November 29, 2019, in Springfield. He was born August 26, 1953, to Jack and Maxine Springer, whose deaths preceded his. Boyd attended Oak Lawn Community High School, and received degrees in economics and law from the University of Illinois. He was a partner at Isham, Lincoln and Beale, and then at Jones Day; his clients and the entire utility law community knew him as a consummate professional. Following his retirement, Boyd moved to Springfield, volunteering countless hours to the Papers Project of Abraham Lincoln, supporting the arts, and traveling extensively.

Throughout his adult life, Boyd took an active interest in supporting, advising, and working with young people, encouraging each one to attain their highest potential. It is difficult to number the ways in which these efforts have enriched our society and bettered our world; if the debt cannot be directly repaid, it can be, and is being, paid forward. That is exactly what he would want.

Boyd is survived by family including his aunt, Rena Springer, cousins, Eileen Springer, Alexis Anderle, and David Springer, all of the Chicago area; caregiver and good friend, Ama Janet Byrd of Springfield; dear friends, Michael and Judi (Jatho) Weber of Palos Heights, Illinois, Michael and Courtney (Janson) Weber of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Donna Lerch, Patrick, Rachel, and Stuart Foster of Springfield; and other friends too numerous to mention.

A Celebration of Life will be from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2020, at Hackney's on Lake (1514 E Lake Ave, Glenview, IL 60025) in the Victoria Room (main floor, accessible). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hoogland Center for the Arts, 420 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL 62701.

My condolences to the family. He was good friends with my brother, who worked together at the law office Isham Lincoln and Beale. What a wonderful man back then, very caring and a good friend of the family.

Boyd came to talk with me about teaching a community education course at LLCC. What a nice man. He was very professional in his approach.

We kept running into one another in recent years and I was happy to learn how much he was enjoying his work with the Papers.

My sympathies to family and friends.

Boyd and I worked together as a team from the day he started practicing law, at the firm of Isham, Lincoln & Beale, until about the year 2000 - a period of over 20 years. We moved, together with the rest of our team and other attorneys, to the firm of Jones Day, effective on January 1, 1987, and continued to work together for about 13 years, when the M&A craze of that period drastically changed our practice. At that time JD asked me to move to Europe and, apart from telephone consultations upon occasion, our practice as a team no longer continued. I always valued the team nature of our practice and the convergence and clash of ideas that it entailed. It always improved our performance for our clients. Boyd was a valued colleague over all those years. After we both retired, we kept in touch and had dinner together during the summer when we were both in Chicago. He invited me to attend a party he was hosting in Springfield this past September, but I could not attend because my wife and I were out of the country during that month. I am sorry I missed it. I was frankly stunned by hearing, this evening, that Boyd had died, given how he had persevered through so much in recent years. I hope to be able to attend the Memorial Service. I have no idea what the time frame is, and do not mean to be presumptuous, but I will be in Chicago from Dec. 26- 30 and could come up from Florida in January except for a family wedding down here absorbing the dates of Jan. 14-15 and 24-27. If that does not fit with your schedule, know that I will be sorry to miss the Service and that I will say a few more prayers for Boyd.
