OAKLAWN FUNERAL HOME - EDNA Obituary

Brent Wayne Bonnot

Brent Wayne Bonnot made his grand entrance into the world on April 8th, 1960, born to Harold Wayne and Shirly Ann (Davis) Bonnot. A true Jackson County native, Brent spent his youth roaming the family ranch north of LaWard. The creek bottom was his private sanctuary, a place where he found peace, sought adventure with his family, and a lifelong spot where he prayed and connected with God through the beauty of nature.

After graduating from Edna High School in 1978, Brent went on to serve the great state of Texas as a park specialist for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department at Lake Texana State Park. But Brent’s career didn’t stop there. He spent several years in the catering industry and later took on the role of a hotshot driver, crisscrossing the U.S. to deliver supplies and materials. Weekdays were spent on the open road, while weekends found him back at the ranch, ensuring the wildlife was well-fed and that hunting trips with family and friends were filled with stories (and probably a few tall tales). After a vehicle accident in 2012, Brent retired from the road to embrace ranch life full-time.

A true '70s child, Brent was a live music enthusiast with a love for rocking out to the best. From Boston to Grand Funk Railroad, Van Halen to Earth, Wind & Fire, The Cars to Steely Dan, if there was a concert, Brent was there. His passion for music never faded—retirement simply meant he traded concert halls for the open air of the ranch, serenading the wildlife with his favorite tunes while cruising around in his golf cart. The coyotes might not fully appreciate it, but they sure have tried to mimic his melodies over the years.

Brent suffered from chronic knee pain, undoubtedly a casualty of his glory days as a [self-proclaimed] top-tier freestyle frisbee player. After a tough three-year battle with cancer, Brent’s journey came to an end on December 14th, 2024. He joins his parents and brother, John Mark, in the next great adventure. The Bonnot family will hold a private memorial on January 18, 2025, at the family ranch, where Brent will continue to roam, in spirit, forever.

If you're ever near the oak bottom, and you hear a distant tune, it might just be Brent's voice, still echoing through the woods, reminding us all to live life loud.
