Brian Gallant Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 25, 2016.
Gallant, Brian Donald

It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of Brian Gallant on October 23, 2016 at age 64. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Geraldine and Frederick Rumsey, and biological father Dorisse Gallant. He was predeceased by his father Dorisse and sister Linda Barbara Gallant, in infancy. Survived by his wife Cheryl, cherished daughter Jackie, sister Gail (Glyn) Maddison, brother Stephen (Rosalind) Gallant, brother-in-law Earl (Darlene) Graham, sister-in-law Diane (Les) Sampson, step sisters Deborah (Micheal) MacKenzie and Holly Rumsey, and his many nieces and nephews. Brian was an Architect Technologist, working with PWGSC for 35 years. He was proud of his many accomplishments including working on projects at Anne of Green Gables, Ardgowan, Citadel Hill, Annapolis Royal, Signal Hill, Cape Spear, Fundy Covered Bridge and many other sites far too numerous to list, but his most cherished was his work as Project Manager for L' Anse Aux Meadow's NHS where he was welcomed by the wonderful community, especially by the Decker family. Brian and Cheryl enjoyed their adventures to far away places such as Turkey, South East Asia, Thailand, Tunisia, Malta, Europe, Central America, and South America, China, Morocco & Portugal with Jackie and many other fascinating places. One special project dealing with canons took him to Poland in 1970. Very few canons around the world have managed to elude Brian's keen eye and Nikon. He was a lover of hot sauces and foreign cuisine, never afraid to try new delicacies…and share a bite with Gibson. Brian and Cheryl fundraised for many months to participate in a full marathon in Iceland for Team Diabetes; with Fred and Jackie in tow, they crossed one hell of a finish line! They participated in 13 Bluenose Marathon events and other races, one just last month in Eastern Passage with Jackie & John. He loved hiking and nature. Many days and weekends were spent at the soccer pitch (in sun, rain or sleet) cheering & supporting his daughter Jackie. Most memorable was the trip the team took to Montreal. He had a knack for fixing and tinkering anything that needed or didn't need to be fixed, always with the right tool for any job; "he was born with a paintbrush in his hand". Brian especially enjoyed his time when he volunteered at Souls Harbour. At the personal request of Brian, there will be no funeral or visitation.
Donations in Brian's memory can be made to Souls Harbour, Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank or Charity of Choice.

On behalf of Souls Harbour RESCUE Mission, I'd like to express my sympathy to Cheryl and her family, for the loss of our dear friend, Brian. Brian and Cheryl were 2 of our founding volunteers, faithfully coming to serve the poor at Drop In, and special times for our big holiday meals, only taking a break in recent times for Brian's health. Brian's smile and graciousness brought good cheer to our kitchen, and as neighbours, I always enjoyed seeing him out and about. Their travels, active life, and community service have been inspiring, and Brian will be greatly missed as part of this dynamic duo. God bless you and comfort you during this time of loss.

PS. Cheryl, I tried multiple times to post a photo of Brian serving, but it did not work. I will post it on our facebook wall.

Oh Brian, I am so sorry to have to say goodbye so soon. You were a class act, at work and in the world. Whenever we met it was always a pleasant experience, and I know that this was coupled with A-level professionalism in your chosen career of historic architecture.
It has been a pleasure knowing you.
To you Cheryl, my best wishes in a difficult time.

Cheryl, Jackie and family,
Losing Brian still seems unreal. Sure he had his problems but he with family seemed to live life to the fullest. Brian was the best example of the expression "Let your actions be your words". Now the words come hard; thankfully you have many good memories to help you.

We have always considered Brian as a true friend and will always fondly remember our times on the soccer field, at social gatherings, at the cottage in the woods and sporadically bumping into you both during your infamous walks. Deepest sympathy on the passing of Brian. He was a well-loved member of both the Decker family and the extended community family in L'Anse aux Meadows. His kindness to all, his patience with the hoards of kids and animals always trailing him, and his loving heart will never be forgotten. Perhaps our thoughts are best expressed in this quote from Thomas Campbell.

To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die

We were so sad to learn of Brian's passing. Working with Brian, first on the L'Anse aux Meadows site, later on many of the follow-up projects, was a great experience, both fun and productive. The weather could be awful on the dig, but punctually at 8 in the morning Brian would show up in his dark blue brimmed hat, always with a big grin that made you feel good in spite of the wind and cold. On other projects he was always impressive in his organization and cooperation. He became a real friend outside work as well. We will miss you, Brian! Our hearts go out to Cheryl and Jackie.

Cheryl and Families:
It is with much profound shock and sadness that Diane and I learn this morning of Brian's passing. Having worked with Brian, at Parks Canada for many years, Brian was truly one of the good ones. Brian will also be fondly remembered for his participation in the annual Fortress of Louisbourg Ball Tournament and that notorious IWK Bed Race where the most fit barely survived. I believe we were the only 'true' bed which still sported the original castors and made pushing a real challenge.
Cheryl let the good times, you had with Brian, get you through this very sad time. Brian will sadly be missed and he is in our prayers.
