Howe-Peterson Funeral Home & Cremation Services - Dearborn Obituary

Brian Jerome Mattern September 26,1953 – June 1, 2025

Brian was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather.  He had a kind heart, a hard work ethic and quick wit sense of humor.  Whether he was hunting, fishing, spending time with his kids/grandkids, at the ice hockey rink, football or baseball field, ready to cheer in a ball cap & smile.  As he retired, he was a fan of spending time with family & friends and going to Tiger games, Red Wing games or the casino.

In 2013, a diagnosis of leukemia began his battle to beat cancer.  Brian successfully overcame 2 events of leukemia and 2 stem cell transplants.  2 years ago, Brian sustained a stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis with liver cancer where he fought until his last breath.  When Brian passed away the morning of 6/1/2025, he was surrounded in the love of his wife and two children.

Brian leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Lois, daughter Michele (Greg) and son Mike. He also had 3 beautiful grandkids, Chris, Katie & Drew.  His parents, Don and Mary Mattern, deceased, who created a family of love and laughter.  Brian leaves his siblings, Debbie (Juris), Mark (Karen), Karen (Mark), Wayne (Deb) and Matt (Cheryl).  He joins his parents and brother Scott and nephew Kyle in heaven.

Brian is survived by many nieces and nephews, and many loving relatives, friends and co-workers.  A special thank you to Brian’s “Be the Match” donor Larry, and a second anonymous donor who gave us 12 additional years with Brian. A special thank you to the amazing oncology team at Henry Ford Health who were with Brian every step of his cancer journey.

Brian will be missed greatly; he was loved by so many but is now at peace and without pain or sickness.

In lieu of flowers the Mattern family kindly asks for donations in Brian’s honor to “Be the Match” or Hospice of Michigan.

We miss you already Pappy.

I loved you brother Bri.

My sincerest condolences to the Mattern Family. Brian fought fiercely with a quiet dignity. His love for his family was apparent, as was their love for him. The world lost a beautiful soul.
