I just learned from Carleton classmate Randy Steinman of Bruce's passing. He was a larger than life figure on campus, known to some fondly as Super Banacek. He was competitive, especially in volleyball, and also playful and caring. He loved science and was a passionate advocate for his discipline among those of us non-scientists. We were grieved to hear of Bruce's passing. We were classmates of Bruce's at
Carleton and have many fond memories of him. He was a frequent jogging partner for both of us (many good runs through the Arb)and a tennis partner--always jovial, concerned about everyone's well-being, and quite notorious as a punster. Hello - I was just checking the Internet for old friends from Carleton, and found the account of Bruce's passing. We were roommates at Carleton from 1974-75, along with John Soderstrom, who went on to a career in physics. I managed to get Bruce into the musical FIORELLO while we were there, and often played volleyball with him - often on the other side of the net!
