A child is dead.
There is an empty car seat in our van.
A pair of shoes by the front door that will never be worn again.
A hole between a big brother and a little brother. Jack and Fred.
Anguishing parents. Robin Dodd and Patrick Danielson.
He died before three of his grandparents. Marilyn and Jimmy Danielson, Laurin Dodd.
He was five years old.

Bruce was so utterly enchanting.
He gave the best hugs.
He was a chatterbox. His chatter was the most beautiful sound. The last word he said was yes when we asked him if he loved us.
His favorite book was about a bear named Corduroy.
He never went to Kindergarten.
He had just lost his second tooth.

Bruce had an inquisitive love for things that could be opened and closed, locked and unlocked. He loved to push the buttons on the elevator.
Bruce was his happiest outside, jumping on the trampoline in the snow or pulling a wheeled suitcase around the neighborhood with YaYa in the rain. Onlookers might have assumed he was unaccompanied as he walked ten steps ahead in the grocery store, pushing his own cart. Bruce laughed at his own jokes; big belly laughs like a contagion. His knock-knock jokes were signature. Bruce was wise, perceptive, friendly, cheerful, and so silly. His cheeks would flush the rosiest red. His hair fell into strawberry colored ringlets. He had a big nose.

Bruce s death was caused by a rare and aggressive brainstem tumor called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). We had never heard of it. Google could tell you the same as we could. This cancer kills children insidiously: most between the ages of four and eleven. It is inoperable, and resistant to chemotherapy. At median, kids live nine to twelve months, and less than 1% survive five years. Bruce lived eight months and six days from the time he was diagnosed. Researchers will use Bruce s donated brain and tumor to continue to search for an effective treatment that will bring hope.

What happens after death? Not one of us knows. The unknown is unsettling, haunting. Is there a soul? A part of Bruce that will exist in a sort of afterlife of as another form of life in the universe now that his physical body has gone to rest? These questions will consume us as we grieve. We will be grieving for the rest of our lives.

We are so thankful to every person who touched Bruce s life. He received extraordinary medical care at the University of Kentucky, Kentucky Children s Hospital, Cincinnati Children s Hospital, and New York University. Bruce s every wish was made to come true with the help of friends, family, organizations, and strangers. Bruce s time on this earth was joyous. He was cherished.

A memorial service will be held at the Milward Celebration Center

Saturday, August 11th.
Visitation at 11:00 am, Service at 1:00 pm.

Not sure what to say?

Our son also passed away young in Lexington Ky., I just saw your suffering & wanted to reach out, Jesus has your baby boy & he’s so safe & happy! We will be reunited with our children after God calls our name when our appointed time on earth is up, & eternity with our kids begins!
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Sending love, Joseph’s mom

Dear Bruce,

I am so sorry we have lost you. I felt like I knew you well. Your spirit, enthusiasm, and independent, loving nature was all around me as I combed through your notes and wrote your song for you through Songs of Love.org. For some strange reason, out of the blue, your song came into my head today and I couldn't shake it. I went to Facebook and saw the news of you passing back in August. I have written dozens of songs for children of all ages over the past 5 years,...

Bruce - I never knew you, but through the pictures and stories your Family has shared I do know this world is a lot less bright without you. Heaven gained a beautiful soul....

Dear Bruce, I will never forget your beautiful and sweet face. I have never met you but you have show me that life is beautiful and that we have to stop worrying about all those silly things and enjoy it. You have also thought me to make sure I hug my children and spend as much time as possible with them. You left this earth too soon but you are now in God's arms free of pain. We love you sweet heart.

Dear family, my heart has ached for you as you've walked this difficult and painful road. I've prayed that the God of all comfort would comfort you. Precious Bruce was ushered by angels into heaven where Jesus Himself welcomed him with a great big "bear hug" and next in line Grandma Alissa smothered him with kisses!

Beautiful soul! May God Bless you and your family.

I have been so deeply touched, moved and inspired to be as wonderful as a Mum as you, Robin. Bruce will live on in my thoughts and prayers.

I only met Bruce once a couple of years ago at a Dodd family reunion in Texas. What an absolutely handsome, engaging, enchanting, intelligent child. I'm so glad I had that opportunity to connect with Bruce. From the beginning all of you have been in my prayers. I know without a doubt that some day I will again reconnect with Bruce as he is now embraced in the arms of Jesus.

I’d like to report something on this page.
