Not sure what to say?

A. witty recent newspaper article on the use of the semi-colon reminded me of Bryce Lambert's amusing and rigorous journalism class about punctuation, word use (avoid adverbs and the use of "very"!) , active voice, and writing style. After reading E..B. White on style, we read White's thoughtful leisurely essays and talked about their style. It was deep teaching about all that goes into good writing. Thank you, Mr. Lambert.

I met Bryce in 1969 at Blair Academy, where we both taught. I will admit I was somewhat intimidated at first because I had heard so much about this great educator who sometimes even knew how to intimidate students. It took only a short time for us to become great friends and throughout the next 38 years we visited each other in Deerfield, Brunswick and my home in Independence, MO. I remember a great trip to Europe in 1975 (my first and his 25th). He was a great guide. My wife, Molly, and I...

Bryce Voter Lambert- it was professors like him who made Deerfield what it is today. I will miss his political banter, the opportunity to educate him about the quality life in Texas and his friendship.

Bryce Lambert was the most eccentric teacher I ever had. His "very" cutter being only one example (he believed "very" was an over used and unnecessary word - that one could achieve emphasis without using it. I remember my early papers coming back with holes cut in them to remove any offending "very". Bryce was also one of the most demanding, and absolutely the best teacher I ever had. The world has lost a great educator.

Caught scribbling on my desk, I was admonished to "Put a piece of paper under that pencil please! Quick, what is the name of that literary device?"

BVL remains near the top of my list of most influential mentors, teachers and molders of men. I shall miss him and keep his memory near.

In 1980, Mr. Lambert taught at Blair Summer School for Journalism and increased my understanding of journalism and myself significantly. I am better for having known him. Rest in peace, Mr. Lambert. Your passion lives on in your students.

bryce lambert. no compromise. endless friends and admirers, including me. what great times, including maine, paris, cairo, london, vienna--a great friend and a great mentor for over fifty years. the deerfield banner at harry's new york bar with BVL in the corner--so much unforgettable stuff, bryce.

This world has certainly lost a fine person in Bryce V Lambert. He knew what scholarship was all about.A keen, witty and well rounded individual who always showed much compassion for his fellow man. May he rest in peace!
