Not sure what to say?

I am sad to say that I didn't know Burt was sick or that he had passed away. I certainly would have come to the celebration of his life today! I enjoyed seeing him every time I did and when he had the Rockaway restaurant, I could count on a Bear Hug! So many childhood memories of Burt and Verna Alton next door to my house. I love you Denise, Wendy, Leslie and Brian and Jeff. You are in my thoughts today,

3 yrs ago, not wanting to nourish my daughter with her usual Bacon&Cheese Biscuit at the neighboring Mickey D's. I treated her to breakfast at the University Bar and Grill. It turned out that I also was in for a treat! Meeting Burt! I was greeted with KIND EYES, and a BIG WARM SMILE that was so GENUINE and COMFORTING at the same time! I was so taken with Burt's PLEASING PERSONALITY that I cut out the Mickey D's breakfast run and made University B&G my daughters stop for breakfast before...

I had the honor of teaching five of Burts grandchildren at Astor School; Steven, Sara, Jacob, Paula and Jared. A couple years ago I would see him almost every day as he would drop off Jared. The first day, Jared yelled out "goodbye Grandpa!" Burt went out of his way to smile, wink, or speak with each child,so by the end of week two, it wasn't just Jared saying "goodbye Grandpa", it was my WHOLE CLASS of first graders. And soon I stopped calling him Burt and I too would call him Grandpa. ...

When we were kids, Burt was a good "big brother". We shared a bedroom and spent a lot of time together. Even though the miles separated us in later years, Burt was still my big brother.

Denise, Wendy, Leslie, Brian and Jeff you all are in my thoughts. We have many memories our families shared growing up being neighbors. I will always remember your dads great smile. Always glad to see you when he saw you. It's a great thought to think your folks are whooping it up again. At this time of sadness my you find comfort in friends and family.

I met Burt while a young man working as the "glass desk" order taker. Burt was my mentor. He was a man who always encouraged me, a person who really didn't want to be there. He was always kind, offering words of compassion and a friend who got away when after three years I left Mercer Steele. My mind often returned to those days when I would see the refuse truck with the Alton name. My condolences to his family.
