Not sure what to say?

My professor and counselor at the University of Michigan. He taught me many more lessons other than Forestry. A kind and compassionate man who gave his all. A role model who could dig a soil pit without getting a white shirt dirty. A family man with beautiful children. I loved him and miss him.

Burt Barnes was, without a doubt, one of the the finest teachers I have ever had, and has tangibly influenced the type of scientist I am today. As I talk through the forests in which I work (and love), I still hear his voice in my head, and use and teach his lessons on how to see a forest, access its soils and deduce its history and potential future.

Thanks Burt. Rest well. We'll carry on from here.

Burt was the most incredible academic teacher I ever experienced and could possibly imagine. Too much! So many unforgettable memories of personal encounters and e-mail conversations of the past 20 years. Ya gotta know the territory - thank you for all of the great lessons you gave!

I am eternally grateful to Burt for all that he's taught me during my time as his student. More importantly, he showed me how to inject humor into life's challenges. There will never be another one like him.

An Incredible Spirit, Burt...Inspirational!!! ...as indelible an imprint as the glaciers of Michigan and as beautiful a soul as any could know

Burt was a great man from whom I learned a lot. While I never had him as a professor, I remember going on nature walks with him at Radrick Forest at the Botanical Gardens. He loved his soil pits! I will miss his fun and witty character. His spirit lives on in the trees.

Burt Barnes was twice my age when I took his course Woody Plants, and then Forest Ecology in the early 70s; but we raced up mature white pines on field trips, and he was as fast as anyone. He was a great teacher, a real favorite who gave me much. My condolences to the family.

I enjoyed hosting Burt & Ikuyo Saeki when they were researching Drummond's Maples here in Southeast Texas. We had a GREAT time! - Wonderful memories

May your hearts be filled with fond memories of your love and give you comfort and solace. May the words of Isaiah 51:12 strengthen you in this difficult time of your dear loss. "I myself am the One comforting you."
