My father thought the world of Byrd. It was Byrd's idea to create a street which my father and the neighbor named in his honor, Saville Row. This made both parcels more valuable and Byrd did not expect any compensation. Two words can be used to describe Byrd, Integrity and Intelligence. He possessed so many great qualities! Byrd was scuch a good friend to my Dad Tom Caldroney . He took him to play cards when my Dad could not drive in his later years. They joked around a lot and had lots of laughs. I believe he even took my Dad flying. Another great man is gone

Byrd was a good friend and mentor. As a fellow submariner he and I would sit out watching the evening telling sea stories at Garner Gliderport. God Speed Byrd, sailor rest yer oar.

I am shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Byrd's passing. Though we have not seen each other for several years, in the past we fought together on public issues we thought important. In these he was a gentleman, but relentless in his devotion.

Tidewater Soaring Society (TSS) would not be what it is today if it wasn´t for Byrd´s driving force and vision. We are forever in his debt. Thank you Byrd. (Photo: Schweitzer 2-33 named "Byrd", used to train pilots, photo courteous of Magnus Einarsson)
