JOHNSON FUNERAL HOME Obituary

Byron Gant Nelson, 75, passed peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, June 14th.

Byron was born on October 28th, 1941 in Baytown, Texas. He graduated from Lake Charles High School in 1959 as a star athlete and honor student then proceeded to McNeese State College until 1961. After receiving an education Byron then enlisted in the United States Army from 1961 to 1968 where he proudly served our country with honor. He enjoyed carpentry, renovation, and relaxing on his beloved wharf. He was inherently at peace near the river watching the boats pass by.

Byron was known for his genuine smile and infectious laugh. He was humble, tenacious, and incredibly intelligent. Many described him as a “one of a kind” character. Byron was driven to further his knowledge on any given topic with literature and research. He cherished close friendships with neighbors and spoke highly of those dear to him. Above everything Byron took great pride in being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was fiercely dedicated to his daughters and granddaughters. Byron’s life joy was solely attributed to his family. Always on his mind and in his heart he loved unconditionally without falter. His home was adorned with photos and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. His love was all encompassing and unwavering.

Byron is survived by his two children, Robin Nelson-Ross, Stephanie Soileau and her husband Jonah Gendron; his two grandchildren, Lindsay Ross and Adelaide Gendron; and his great-grandson Rainn Ross.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 23, 2017 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel.  The Rev. Russell Beard will officiate.  A gathering of family and friends will begin on Thursday from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM and will continue on Friday from 8:00 AM until the start of the service.

Not sure what to say?

We certainly miss our dear Mr. Byron!

Just a note knowing Mr. Byron would be so proud of his apple tree and the fruit it bears. A delicious treat and evidence of his green thumb;)

I've had the pleasure of knowing Byron for the past few years from a local gym in our community named Dynamic Dimensions. Byron was part of our gym family. He always made it a point to tell me hello and ask me how things were going each and every morning. He was a very kind hearted sweet man. There was never a morning that he didn't greet me with a smile. He will truly be missed.

I'll always remember Byron as a friend. We used to sit together up in the balcony at First Methodist church in Lake Charles and talk every Sunday morning. His smile always made you feel good. He was a special person.May you RIP my friend.

I didnt know Byron very well, but Dennis talked about him very dearly. My prayers to his daughters and all his Family.

Mr. Nelson helping staff with an event poster. He's the one in the middle with the red t-shirt on!

Mr. Nelson was one of our favorite patrons here at the Moss Bluff Library. He always had a nice smile and pleasant word for everyone on staff. He even participated with staff for a poster we made for an event several years back. I have attached a picture of it. He's there in the middle in the red shirt looking over his shoulder. We will miss seeing him here on almost a daily basis.

Sincerely,

The staff at Moss Bluff Library

Had he pleasure of visiting with Byron during a Saints playoff game always laughing and positive I enjoyed our visit. He was a character but fun to be around.

We had the pleasure of building and living next to Mr. Byron on the river. He was one of a kind and had an infectious personality. We all enjoyed his company and knew he watched out for us. Our girls always liked to see what he was tinkering on and still
treasure a little seashell trinket box he had given them one summer afternoon. He will be missed by so many. Prayers for his children and family.

Byron and i grew up together in grammar, high school and college. Our families lived in the same area for several generations. Byron and i had great times together, and i am greatly saddened to hear Byron is no longer with us. Although we did not see each other for many years as our lives went down different paths, i thought of Byron and our youthful times together not infrequently. i am praying now of Byron and his family, and wish i could see you.
