Because I had witnessed Al's solid, fair and impeccable reporting and writing for a good part of my life, he was my journalistic mentor long before 1979 when I became his assistant editor at The Baldwinsville Messenger. During the eight years I was fortunate enough to work under his tutelage, he taught me everything he knew about the business of newspapering and helped me build a solid foundation that would lead to a long and rewarding career in the daily newspaper business.
