Not sure what to say?

Friends since childhood, a group of us recently started a book club. Mr French came up ad an inspiration, leading me to this touching tribute. I was not an exceptional student but the lessons Mr French taught have stayed with me and my understanding of them has grown. Reading the obituary, I realize how fortunate I was to have known him, truly. Sincerely Mike Tieman, UHS Class of 88

Just came across this, but wanted to add my deepest condolences to a truly amazing teacher. I don't remember much about my teachers in high school, but he Mr. French stood out as a really great person. When I caught chicken pox my junior year, he took to the time to write a get well card and sent it to my home. Usually feeling pretty invisible, this made me really feel special.

So sad to hear the news of Mr. French's passing. I had the pleasure of being in his AP English class, and also a member of the Hiking Club. we had some great hikes to the local mountains. What a great man and teacher.

Cal was a most beloved advisor for the Highland Mountaineers of UHS. Will always treasure adventures with this group and Sierra Club trips with Cal and Letty.

Sincere condolences to Chuck and the rest of the French family.....

What a wonderful dear man.

In 1964-65, Cal French was my Junior year English teacher at Upland High School. Quiet, gentle, unassuming, scholarly, I believe it was his first year teaching. Classroom control was not a goal. His goal was to transform us, help us to think, be creative, broaden our perspectives, become lovers and creators of good writing. And I love to write today because of Cal French. Thank you, Mr. French, you are a great and inspiring teacher, always remembered.

My twin sister and I had Mr. French in our junior year at Upland High School. He was my favorite English teacher and I remember him talking about the Sierra Club in class.

Looking back from nursery school to grad school and beyond, Mr. French remains one of my all time favorite teachers. I consider myself luck to have been in his class. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Bob Crow
