Leson’s Funeral Home LTD. - Canora Obituary

Campbell Vincent Papequash, passed away at the Foothills Hospital, Calgary, AB on January 13, 2016 at the age of 80 years. Campbell was born on January 25, 1935 to Archie and Alice (O’Soup) Papequash of Key First Nation, SK. He received his education from St. Phillip’s Residential School. Campbell continued to live his young adult life until he experienced a spontaneous awakening on the streets of Vancouver, BC that made it clear he would begin a journey to sobriety and return to Key First Nation. Along his journey, Campbell became a positive role model and well respected mentor within his community. He had many friends and support throughout Canada. In time, Campbell accomplished a lifelong dream as he wrote and published a book entitled, “The Yearning Journey: Escape from Alcoholism.” The book outlined Campbell’s life and chronicled his time at Residential School, how it navigated him to a life on the streets and eventually led him to a peaceful life of culture and traditional ceremony. With this book and what he knew of the history of his people, his intension was to leave behind a legacy for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many generations to come. Well respected and culturally diverse, Campbell became the chief of Key First Nation. He maintained a Vision Quest and Culture Camp for many years. As well, Campbell worked with Corrections Canada as an elder for twenty-five years. His journey of healing continues to be an inspiration to many. He will be dearly loved and missed by his family, community and his many friends across several countries. Campbell was predeceased by his parents, Archie and Alice (O’Soup) Papequash; brothers: Harold, Dave, Alfie, Randy and Delvin; sisters: Margaret, Gloria, Cheryl and Adeline; children: Eric (Banky) Keshane, Sandra Quewezance and Orville Brass; grandson, Robin Badger; uncles, Alec and Charlie; aunts: Nora Crane, Harriet Brass, Rebecca Brass, Agnes Key and Helen Stevenson; and niece, Marlene Gervais and nephew, Dean Innis. My deepest sympathy to the friends and family Of Campbell.
I met Campbell on the Key Reserve in the 80"s when John was working there. He was a soft spoken kind man and always enjoyed having a bit of conversation. R.I.P.
