Gene was a remarkable man. I met him at the US Merchant Marine Academy and traveled to Rancho Jacona to interview him regarding his sea-going career. He had so many wonderful stories, and remembered everything. His life was long, and he had many adventures as a young man. He will be missed.

I knew Gene through my step-dad Dean Carmicheal who passed in 2017 age 94.5. He was a good friend of Gene's through much of his life starting in the early days of Toast Masters. The two of them had many years of great laughter and love of each other's humor and wit. I miss Deano and I am sorry I was not aware that Gene met up with one of his good story telling amigos Gene had so many stories and comments about Dean at his memorial, we all so much appreciated his coming along with Hank...
