George L Doherty Funeral Service, Inc - Somerville Obituary

Carl E. Mattson, Jr., of Tewksbury and formerly of Somerville, passed away at home with his beloved wife, caregiver and nurse, Claire by his side following a courageous battle against cancer on September 7, 2023, he was 73.

Born in Stoneham, Carl grew up in Somerville, the oldest of four boys born to Aurora (Kazanjian) and Carl E. Mattson, Sr. He graduated form Somerville High and went onto receive his associate degree from Bryant and Stratton College. He also served in the National Guard for 6 years during Vietnam. A sales rep for several food brokerages, he retired after a 40-year career.

Carl was a lover of all sports; starting the morning with the Sports section and Sundays were often spent with the guys watching the games and enjoying a few cold ones. He loved golf and enjoyed many golf trips locally and annually to Myrtle Beach. Carl finally married the love of his life, Claire Sullivan on September 23, 2011. Together they enjoyed travelling up and down the east coast from Maine to Florida, cruises, and trips to the islands with friends and many beach days, living life to the fullest. For the past five years, Claire and Carl spent the winters in Florida, making many lasting friendships and memories. He was also a member of the Tewksbury-Wilmington, MA Lodge of Elks No. 2070. A great guy, Carl will certainly be remembered by many for his great tan, unforgettable laugh and above all, his loyalty to family and friends.

The beloved husband of Claire (Sullivan) Mattson. Carl was the loving brother of Jim Mattson and his partner Linda of Tewksbury, Steven Mattson and his wife Sue of NH and the late John Mattson. Dear brother in law of  Maureen Zonghetti and her late husband Frank of Andover, Barbara O’Hearn and her husband John of Tewksbury, Mark Sullivan of Wilmington, Thomas Sullivan and his wife Denise of Saratoga, NY. Cherished uncle of Chrissy and Jen Mattson, Christopher and Lisa Zonghetti, John, Robert and Barbara O’Hearn, Taylor and Connor Sullivan and the late Brendan Sullivan. Great-Uncle of Miranda and Rylee. Carl is further survived by many loyal friends.

Calling Hours will be held in the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq) on Wednesday, September 20th from 4pm-7pm. Relatives and friends invited to attend.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Tewksbury-Wilmington Lodge of Elks 2070, 777 South St, Tewksbury, MA 01876  on Thursday, September 21st  from 12pm – 5pm.
