Carl was one of the great personalities of the world of duplicate bridge when I first arrived in Portland in 1971. I remember vividly when he agreed to play a session of a unit game, no small event in those days, shortly after my arrival. We had a good game and I was entertained throughout!! I recall many nights at Hung Far Low when he would tell a story and conclude it with "I made the worst play/bid in the history of bridge!!".
