Carlos Caban and I worked together at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health. We have known each other for 32 years. He has taken on the role of mentor, father and even been my boss at NCI, for a few years. With my multiple disabilities, Carlos has had faith in my ability to succeed. He taught me how to use a windows computer. He guided me in purchasing both of my condos. He read mail to me and helped me with financial matters, until I finally learned to scan...

The members of the Metro Maryland Ostomy Assoc. are sad to hear of your loss and the void that is left in our group. Dr. Caban was an active member of the organization and participated on panels at our monthly meetings. He was always available to call new ostomy patients to calm their fears on how one survives with an ostomy. The volunteer service that he has provided to his community and to others like us is the rent he paid to the universe for allowing him...

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you in this time of loss. Carlos was like a second father to me growing up as a child. I often remember the good times my brother Alan and I had with Jon and David hanging out in the Caban house. Whether being there for lunch, dinner or just playing around the house, it remains part of my fondest memories. From my first lessons camping, learning to use power tools, and learning how to play tennis (his true sports passion), were taught to me by Carlos....
