Not sure what to say?

Carol was a mentor for me at Florida State University. She loved her work and was so intent on studying and developing ways for all children to learn to read. I have always thought fondly of her. My sincere condolences to her family. We presented at many of the same conferences. You mother and wife was truly a blessing to me.

Although I did not know Carol well, I certainly knew her work. In our few personal interactions, I learned to respect that her research interests crossed disciplinary boundaries, allowing us to quickly establish commonality in professional and personal realms. Carol was one of a kind and not many will be able to walk in her footsteps.

Our sincere condolences. Love Dennis and Diane Hussey

I had the pleasure of playing women's soccer with Carol in Ann Arbor years ago. I enjoyed getting to know her and am saddened to hear of her passing. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

Carol was a warm, highly supportive colleague and humble giant in reading and education. Her work has transformed reading interventions for children worldwide. My thoughts are with her husband, Jay, children and grandchildren - may your great memories of Carol provide some support at this very difficult time.

Among the many things we did together, organizing and holding an Extraordinary Brain Symposium on Reading Intervention, held in the Azores, stands out as one of the best. Here are Jay and Carol on that trip... I miss her very deeply.

Carol was a wonderful researcher and colleague. She did a huge amount for the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading (SSSR). She served as treasurer for a very long time and managed that organization's finances extremely well. I was looking forward to seeing her become President of SSSR. She loved academia. She clearly dearly loved her family, her work, and her friends. She is someone who I think did not waste a single second of her life. She lived it all to the fullest.

Carol was a spirited force for good in our literacy field and in the world. I always looked forward to seeing her at conferences and hearing about her latest impressive - work. It is so hard to believe that her presence will now be missing from those gatherings.
