Carol Anne Devers died unexpectedly on December 16th, 2023. She was born in Chicago, Illinois to Elvezia “Elvie” Ramicone from the Abruzzi Mountains in Italy and Ruckino “Rocky” DiCarlo of Chicago.
After graduating from Mundeline College, Carol first taught high school Spanish. While starting graduate work at the University of Notre Dame in the summer of 1968, she was walking with a friend across the campus when a big sprinkler sprayed and soaked them both. One bystander let out a roaring laugh. She confronted this man, Greg Devers, by saying, "Well, I’m so glad I gave you such a good laugh." That comment led to a conversation that lasted for hours. In three months, they were engaged and they were married four months later. Carol and Greg raised their three children -- Allison, Michelle, and Mark – moving first to Briarwood, NY, then to Glen Rock, NJ, New Canaan, CT and Wickford, RI. When all three children moved to the Pacific Northwest, she and Greg moved cross-country and settled in Mukilteo, WA.
Carol was a close friend to many, and her friendships were extremely important to her. She maintained relationships from all parts of her life, spending hours on the phone every week to keep up with long distance friends. After moving to Washington State, she made many new close friends by participating actively in the Newcomers Club, including such groups as Book Group, Epicureans Group, All Things French, Bridge, and others. She even served on the Board of Directors for a time. Carol loved going to the theater, reading voraciously, spending time with her family, being social with her friends, and going on travel adventures.
She centered her life on others, not only friends and family, but even those she encountered at shops, gatherings, and the grocery store. She genuinely cared about the interests, struggles, and successes of those she met, carefully listening to their stories and remembering the details. She often tried to help in any way she could. She was generous and giving with so many. She also had a great sense of humor and a silly side. Those close to her really got to see her sarcastic wit. As she would say with a smile, “I like to get a reaction.” She was a friend to all and her loss will be felt by many near and far.
Carol is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, Greg, her children Allison, Michelle Mazurek (Jeff), and Mark (Beegee) and her grandchildren Erin, Sage, Elvie and Iris. She is also survived by her sister Lu Patterson and nephew Fred.
