O'Brien Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services - South Hadley Obituary

Carol Mieg Volpe, 82, passed peacefully on February 4, 2023 with her daughters by her side. Carol grew up in South Hadley, MA and earned a degree in English literature from Mount Holyoke College. Always an avid reader and lover of books, Carol became the first manager of the Odyssey Bookshop in South Hadley when it opened back in 1963. After marrying in 1966, she and her husband moved to Philadelphia, where she worked as a buyer for the University of Pennsylvania bookstore and later as an editor for the Westminster Press. They then moved to South Jersey, where Carol stayed home to raise her two daughters. She spent much of her time tending her beautiful gardens, cooking, and baking amazing Swiss cookies. In addition to sewing clothes and elaborate Halloween costumes, she founded her own craft business and sold her felt creations at local craft fairs. In 2005, Carol moved back to her family home in South Hadley to care for her beloved sister in the final years of her life. She was always happiest when she was surrounded by the gardens, birds, and grandchildren that she loved. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to honor Carol’s memory through donations to the Clapp Memorial Library in Belchertown, MA. All services are private.
