Hawthorne Funeral Home - Mount Vernon Obituary

Carolin (Carol) Lee Garrard was born to Zela Essie and her husband, World War II Army veteran, Charlie Hargis in Searcy, Arkansas on March 28, 1947. Carol has an older sister, Shirley Hawkes, Younger brother, Bobby Dillard, and youngest sister Constance McGuire.

Carol was a very friendly and social girl who graduated from Eastmont High School in East Wenatchee, WA. She was a member of the cheerleading squad and enjoyed going to church and helping her mother prepare southern cooked meals and working in the garden.

Carol was married to Michael Goodman, and they had three children together. Daughter, Kristine Hudson, and sons Gregory and Dale Goodman.

After Carol’s divorce she met and married the “love of her life” Kenneth Garrard in 1981. Ken was a member of the US Navy and they lived in Oak Harbor and Mount Vernon, WA. Carol became a stepmother to Ken’s children Deborah and Brent Garrard. She was a fun and loving mother to all her children.

Carol worked as a waitress and grocery checker/manager. She volunteered in the hospital labor and delivery and with the Skagit Valley Tulip festival committee. She was president of the Red Hatters and a Camp fire leader. Carol attended Skagit CC Where she enjoyed photography and watercolor painting classes.

Carol leaves behind her grandchildren Nathan and Natalie Goodman, and Kaymon Dingwall, her nieces Julie Johnston, Kara Dillard Melendez and nephews Jim Hawkes, Shane Dillard, AG Dillard, Caleb McGuire, and McKenzie Laws.

Carol cherished her daughters in law Tara Hudson and Ginger Goodman and lifelong friends Barbra Bainard and Larry Jones.

Carol would like to thank the care staff and residents at Mira Vista care center, Skagit Valley Hospital staff, Mount Vernon kidney Center, and the drivers at Skagit Dial-A-Ride for all their efforts in helping her live her last years.

Carol never backed down from a challenge and was quick to engage in a conversation and give a smile. Carol passed away on April 6, 2022, after many years of declining health. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
