Broomhead Funeral Home - Riverton Obituary

Carolyn departed in the early morning hours November 7, 2013. Destination Heaven! She was the daughter of Ivan Victor Southam and Myrle Ada Wretberg. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah September 4, 1940. She attended Jackson School and West High School where she was on the academic honor roll each term until graduation. She was employed by the equitable life assurance society until she became a wife and mother. She married Brent E. Butterfield April 27, 1962. She was the mom of Chris Butterfield, Shaun I. Butterfield ( Merrillyn), Brian M . Butterfield (Angie) and Amber M. Rotz.
She was a woman of honor and integrity. She loved Kids and animals. She especially loved her Grandkids. They made up the final fabric of her life and gave her one more opportunity to teach love, kindness and the truths of the gospel. She was cool and efficient in a crisis! Carolyn was talented in many ways. She enjoyed painting in pastels. She was a prolific ceramicist. She played the accordion as a young adult. As a member of an accordion band she participated in many competitions traveling across the country on a bus. They won many awards but she says the best part of the competitions was riding the bus and playing poker for pennies. As an eight year old she entered an art contest which allowed her to participate in a spelling bee at the Lyric Theater Saturday cartoons. She won the spelling bee and was awarded a brand new Bike by Eddie Dean a singing cowboy star of her youth. Her mother was listening on the radio and couldn't believe what she was hearing.
Active in the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, She served as Sports and camp director. She served as Young Woman's President, Relief Society Presidencies many times. She was a dedicated genealogist. She Served as Secretary/Transcriber for Patriarch Bill Fresh of the Sandy Crescent Stake for seven years. She was a Sunday school teacher, her most challenging calling. As a newlywed in a growing area she had a class of three year olds with 72 kids on the roster. This, according to her, was her greatest challenge. She came home each Sunday, threw up, had a migraine and began to look forward to the next week.
Carolyn is survived by her Husband, her beloved children, her cherished Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, Brother and ever protector Donald V. Southam (Virginia). Many nieces and nephews. Brothers and sisters in law. Roger and Sue Butterfield, Craig and Becky Butterfield, Janeal and Kent Wells, Mike and Veda Burgoyne, Kim and Rhonda Rindlisbacher. Preceded by sister-in-law Janean Butterfield
Special thanks to our lifelong friend and physician Dr. Thomas M. Dietz, and our appreciation to Rocky Mountain Hospice.
