Carolyn McMurtrey of Ririe, Idaho passed away on October 20, 2024 of lymphoma. She was 80 years old. Carolyn grew up on an Idaho dairy farm with her seven siblings and parents she adored. She went on to study nursing at Ricks College. She became a registered nurse and spent her life helping people who were sick to feel better. She worked in doctors’ offices and hospitals, proudly ending her career in nursing as a surgical nurse. Once she could no longer do the physical labor of clinical nursing, she went to work for the state of Idaho, where she helped families of profoundly disabled children access the care and resources they needed. She was honored to do this work and did everything she could to serve those families well.

However, her greatest joy was her family. Carolyn married Bruce McMurtrey on August 28, 1964. They spent the next sixty years together. Carolyn said that Bruce was one of her favorite people in the whole world and that she felt lucky to see him every day, and he knew his most important job was to hold her hand right up to the end. Together they would raise three sons named Blair (Cathy), Byron (Lisa), and Boyd (Sherry), and one daughter named Allison. Carolyn would tell everyone who would listen that she was lucky to have raised four kind, thoughtful, generous humans. As a family, they would go camping and hiking. Carolyn knew there was nothing better than a campfire on a mountain with her family. Later, she and Bruce would welcome nine grandchildren they adore.

She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she cheerfully served in a wide range of positions, but her favorite was working with kids. Her beliefs guided her life and brought comfort when times were difficult. Carolyn was kind and funny and thoughtful and generous. Her family is devastated by her loss.

Her services will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at 2:00 pm at the Ririe LDS Chapel (285 2nd West, Ririe, Idaho, 83443). Viewings will be held on Friday, October 25, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm and prior to the funeral service from 12:30-1:45 pm at the same chapel. Interment will be in the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery.
