NICKELSVILLE, VA – CARRIE RUTH “SHADY” FIELDS, AGE 89

With deep sadness and loving remembrance, we announce the passing of Carrie Ruth Fields, affectionately known as “Shady” and to her siblings as “Shady Lady on Ponderosa Road.” She left this world peacefully on June 7, 2025, at the age of 89, surrounded in spirit by the family and love that defined her life.

She was born in Scott County, VA on December 19, 1935 to the late Joe and Sylvia Addington and was a lifelong resident of Nickelsville, where she built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and the comforting scent of her famous biscuits and gravy. Her happiest moments were spent with a full house- family and friends gathered around her table, her garden thriving just outside, and a love tucked into every corner.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband Howard Fields; children, Joy Pendleton, Eddie “Ted” Fields, and Amy Williams; brother, John “Pete” Addington; and maternal grandparents, Ada and Lewis Kilgore. While her absence leaves a deep void, we find comfort in knowing she is reunited with those she cherished and missed so dearly.

Shady is survived by her son, Michael Fields and his wife Mia; her siblings Linda Campbell, Fran Moore, Ada Addington and Buster Addington; sister-in-law, Bridgette Addington; grandchildren, Sydney Fields, Leah Williams, Neal Williams, Josh Collins, Tyler Fields and Amber Forrester. She also leaves behind several great-grandchildren, who will carry her love and legacy forward.

Shady lived a rich life in love, movement and meaning. She never sat still for long – whether she was tending to her garden, walking through her neighborhood, or simply making sure everyone around her was fed and cared for.

A celebration of Shady’s life will be held at a later date. In the meantime, all who loved her are welcome to stop by her son Michael’s home to share stories, offer comfort and remember the amazing woman she was.

A special thanks to Leah and Neal for always taking special care of their precious mamaw.
