Henry Cartan Clarke
March 15, 1929 - August 29, 2018

Clarke, Henry Cartan, age 89, died on August 29, 2018 in Saint Simons Island, GA with Pat, his devoted wife, at his side. Cartan was born March 15, 1929 in New York City, the son of the late Richard Warner Clarke and the late Catherine Barbeau Cartan Clarke. He grew up in Katonah, NY and attended Canterbury School, Deerfield Academy and Amherst College. He served several years in the Naval Reserve. Cartan began an insurance career at Marsh & McLennan in 1949, worked in four offices, beginning in New York City, followed by Buffalo, NY, Minneapolis, MN, and ending in Atlanta, GA. In 1982, he was made one of that firm's original group of Managing Directors, and he retired in 1992 after 43 years. Cartan married Helen Katherine "Pat" Kennedy of Mount Kisco, NY, in 1950, and they raised their family in Buffalo, NY and for 27 years in Wayzata, MN, moving to Atlanta in 1983. While living in Wayzata, Cartan was a member of the board of Highcroft Country Day School and later The Blake Schools. He also co-founded The Woodlands Group Home in Wayzata for adults with special needs. In Atlanta, Cartan was a member of the ecumenical charitable organization the Order of St. Lazarus and the Archbishop's Task Force on AIDS. Upon Cartan's retirement in 1992, he and Pat moved to Sea Island, GA. Interested in genealogy, he was a member of the Sons of the Revolution, the Society of Colonial Wars, and the Clan Campbell Society. Cartan enjoyed playing golf, tennis and platform tennis and his past memberships at Woodhill Country Club, the Minneapolis Club, Sea Island Golf Club, Ocean Forest Golf Club and the U.S. Seniors' Golf Association. In retirement, Cartan served on the Sea Island Property Owners' Association, was head marshal for the 2001 Walker Cup at Ocean Forest, and was a parishioner of Saint William Catholic Church.

He was a dedicated husband, father and businessman. He loved American history, music and sports. He revered the flag and was committed to his faith. Family and friends alike enjoyed his wry sense of humor.

Cartan was preceded in death by 17 days by his son, Laurence "Larry" Clarke, and earlier by a brother, Michael Clarke. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Pat Clarke, his children: Henry Clarke (Kathy) of Laytonsville, MD; Cynthia Clarke, Larry's widow, of LaPlace, LA; Donald Clarke (Mary Jo) of Lake Oswego, OR; David Clarke (Julie) of Bronxville, NY; Michael Clarke of Chattanooga, TN; Helen Laseter (Scott) of Atlanta, GA; and Patrick Clarke (Katie) of Wilmette, IL. He is further survived by 15 grandchildren: Brian Clarke (Katie); Kelly Clarke; Michael Clarke (Rachel); Catherine Sanchez (Rick); Matthew Clarke; Kevin Clarke (Erin); Annapatrice Johnson (Corbin); David Clarke (Johanna); Anita Galie (Peter); Patrick Clarke (Jess); Henry Laseter; Charlotte Laseter; Charles Clarke; W. Cartan Clarke; and Tyler Clarke; and by 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. His brother Richard Clarke (Lua) of Mystic, CT also survives him.

The family expresses gratitude to the caring staff at the Retreat at Marsh's Edge and to the staff and chefs at The Lodge at Sea Island.
