In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Dr. Thomas F. Coates Jr. of Crozier and Judge Wade S. Coates of Tazewell. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Katherine Beale Coates of Richmond; children, Mary Coates Bennett and John F. Bennett III of Richmond, and Townes C. Not sure what to say?

I just heard of Carter's passing and wanted to express my sympathy to the Coates' family. I remember the fondness my father had for Carter as I grew up . I remember Carter as a kind and gentle man.

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
