CATHERINE SMITH Obituary

CATHERINE SMITH Catherine (Cathy) Smith of Las Vegas, passed away February 6, 2019. Cathy was born June 18, 1926, in Winnemucca. She had resided in Las Vegas since 1955. Cathy worked as a school Administrative Secretary at Roy W. Martin Junior High School which she helped open in 1960. She then transferred to Valley High School in 1966. After 24 years there, she went to Cimarron Memorial High School where she helped open it in 1990. Cathy retired from the Clark County School District in 1993 after 33 years of dedicated service. Cathy was honored when the Valley High School Yearbook Valhalla dedicated the yearbook in her honor in 1980-1981 for her service and devotion to education. She worked on the Comprehensive Master Plan for Excellence in Education and received a Distinguished Service Award. Cathy was selected for the Excellence in Education Hall of Fame in 1989. She received many awards from Valley High School and Cimarron Memorial High School. She was a life member of the Nevada State PTA, Life Member of the Clark County Educational Office Personnel, Troop Leader for Girl Scouts of America plus camp counselor at Foxtrail Girl Scout Camp. She was a faithful member of the Lakes Lutheran Church where she served on various committees and was the Financial Recorder for a number of years. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Florence and H.H. Sheldon; her mother and father, Alice Christopher and Clayton Coppin; her husband, Carl Smith; daughter, Susan Shevlin; and granddaughter, Jael Palmer. Cathy is survived by her daughter, Carlene Simon (Greg); five grandchildren, Stephanie Dalton (Jeff), Matt Shevlin, Jennifer Ecklund (Chris), Carl Simon (Amber) and Charles Simon (Rui); and eight great-grandchildren, Ashley Brown, Alyson Brown, Mackenzie Shevlin, Jack Shevlin, Zack Simon, Sam Simon, James Simon and Winter Simon. She leaves behind her beloved Bichon, Neeco. He was her walking partner for many years. Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. Fri., Feb. 15, at Palm South Jones Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89146. Services will be at 11 a.m. Sat., Feb. 16, at Lakes Lutheran Church 8200 W Sahara Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89117. Burial to follow at 2 p.m. at Palm Northwest Cemetery, 6701 N. Jones Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89031.
