Catherine S. Colwell, 89, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at a Blue Hill hospital.
She was born May 17, 1914 in Hancock, the daughter of Charles C. and Mary E. (West) Stratton. Catherine was educated in Hancock schools and graduated from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, class of 1932.
She married Alfred H. Colwell March 5, 1938. Her family was always her number one priority. While raising her five children, Catherine was an active member of Harborview Chapter #136, O.E.S in Deer Isle, where she was Past Matron and was then appointed Ada, a Grand Officer, and one of the five star points of the Eastern Star, which was a source of pride for her. Catherine was a loyal spectator and supporter of her children and all their athletic endeavors.
An avid bridge player, her card table was always ready for a good game of Scrabble or Pinochle as well. Catherine also held an interest in music, and spent much time playing the piano for many organizations and for many holidays and family gatherings.
She is survived by five children, Richard J. Colwell and his wife Rosemary of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Nancy C. Eaton and her husband Pearl of Deer Isle, Claire C. Davis and her husband Peter of Coral Springs, Florida, Clarice C. Stiehl and her husband Walter of Coconut Creek, Florida, and Thomas A. Colwell and his wife Paula of Deer Isle; twelve grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; a special sister in law, Elaine Stratton of Ellsworth; her special friends and bridge partners, Pat Poitras, Lucia
Donovan, and Jane McCormick; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by twin sons, Robert and Roger; two sisters, Julia Grant, and Mary Judah; three brothers, Richard, Ronald, and Lawrence Stratton; and a special friend and bridge partner, Dot Judkins.
Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-7:30 P.M. Thursday at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Main St., Stonington. Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Friday at the First Congregational Church of Deer Isle, Church St., Deer Isle. Private interment will be at the Riverside Cemetery, Hancock.
