Honaker Funeral Home, Inc. - Slidell Obituary

Catherine Ann Burns Smith, of Pearl River, LA, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 26, 2021.  She was born October 25, 1942 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Daughter of the late David Ruffin Burns and the late Catherine Rita Del Buono Burns.

Catherine, who grew up known as “Cathy” by everyone but her late husband, who always called her “Catherine Ann.” She graduated from Chalmette High School, class of 1960.  Following graduation, she married her high school sweetheart on February 11, 1961 and briefly lived in Chalmette before settling in Pearl River.  She was employed by Whitney Bank in Downtown New Orleans before starting her twenty-five-year career with the St. Tammany Parish School Board, where she worked first as a Paraprofessional at Carolyn Park Middle School, and then at Bayou Woods Elementary as an Assistant Librarian.  She and her husband Ed were also the owners of Twin Oaks Mobile Manor and multiple rental properties.   After retiring, she and Ed were able to travel and spend time with their children and grandchildren. Cathy was always behind the camera documenting life’s precious moments and making sure her family had many memories to look back on.  Everyone that met her set out to be her friend because those who knew her, loved her.  Her greatest accomplishment was her family and the house she made home.

In addition to her parents, Cathy was preceded in death by her dear husband, Edward Eugene Smith, Sr. and great-granddaughter Ava Smith.  She is survived by her brother, David Ruffin Burns Jr. (Jeannette); her son Eddie Smith, Jr. (Wanda) and her daughter Candy Smith (Mike); her eight grandchildren, Eddie Smith III, Shavon Ryan, Matt Smith (Brandie), Taylor Smith McLain (Dalton), Chase Ryan, Michael Smith Jr., Samantha Smith and Jacob Smith; her 6 great-grandchildren, Ella-Rose Smith, Maison McLain, Avery Smith, Emerson Smith, Luke Smith, and Brooks McLain; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Those who wish to celebrate the memory of Cathy in a special way, please consider making a donation to the American Diabetes Association and/or the American Brain Tumor Association in her name.
