Charles Waldo Bacon, Jr., died peacefully in his sleep May 7, 2006, from the effects of old age and Alzheimer’s Disease. He had been residing and receiving care at Pine Rock Manor in Warner, NH, since April 2004.
He was born in Jaffrey Center, NH, April 4, 1923, graduated from Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, MA, and lived his entire life in Jaffrey at the property known as ‘The Ark’ on Dublin Road. In 1942 he married Irene Virginia Hunt, also of Jaffrey. Together they raised a family, ran a family hotel, made maple syrup, and developed a successful polyethylene container business for the maple industry right from the house in which Charles had been born.
He had been active in the Jaffrey Lions’ Club, and served as town Civil Defense Director during WWII and a number of years following. He was a volunteer for 25 years with the Jaffrey Fire department. He was a member of the Half Way House Association. He served on the Old Burial Ground Committee. He was inducted into the American Maple Hall of Fame in Croghan, NY for his activity and contributions to that industry over his lifetime.
He was preceded in death by his grandson James in 1990 and his wife Virginia in 1993.
Survivors include children and their spouses Charles III and Jeanne of Running Springs, CA; David and Kathryn of Escondido, CA; James and Sara of Jaffrey; and, Patricia and Jack Brideau of Warren, MA. Surviving grandchildren include Corie, Michelle, Denise, Stephanie, Angela, Jane, Rebecca, Susan, Jennifer, David, Jessica and Danielle, and many great-grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 19, 2006 at 10:00AM at the First Church in Jaffrey,
14 Laban Ainsworth Way, Jaffrey Center. Rev. Deborah Hill, Pastor of the First Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at the Old Burial Ground in Jaffrey Center next to his wife of 50 years.
