Charles Herman Breland Sr. DENMARK - Charles Herman Breland, Sr., 86, of Denmark, South Carolina, died Wednesday, February 20, 2013, in the presence of his wife and children. He was a loving husband, father and "PaPa." Born in Colleton County, January 29, 1927, Mr. Breland was the son of the late Rufus Breland and Susan Givens Breland. Mr. Breland is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Bunton Breland; a daughter, Margaret Meyer (Mack) of Bamberg, SC; two sons, Charles Breland (Patsy) of Denmark, SC, and Bobby Breland (Amanda) of Seneca, SC. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Mike Meyer (Nancy), William Meyer (Amanda), Tori Hay (Ben), Charlie Breland (Crystal), Barrett Breland (Melanie Garrett), Rob Breland and Kathryn Breland; and four great-grandchildren, Josh Meyer, Breland Hay, Thomas Hay and Chaz Breland. In addition to his parents, Mr. Breland was preceded in death by his sister, Clara Breland. Mr. Breland served his country during World War II, in service with the U.S. Navy. Mr. Breland began working with Lower State Gas Company in 1952. He moved to Denmark in 1953 and later, purchased the gas company, serving Denmark and the surrounding communities for nearly 60 years. He devoted many years to coaching the youth and little league baseball teams of Denmark. Mr. Breland was a charter member of the Denmark Volunteer Rescue Squad. Mr. Breland was a member of Denmark First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Jim Tant Sunday School Class. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Denmark First Baptist Church with burial immediately following in Denmark Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 22, 2013, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Denmark First Baptist Church. The family would like to thank home caregivers, Mary Bias, Rosenia Sease and Jackie Aiken and the Community Home Care and Hospice Nurses, B.J. Hiott and Patricia Bruce. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Community Home Care and Hospice, or Denmark First Baptist Church.
