Not sure what to say?

What an amazing Michigan Man. I have seen and marveled at this man for many years riding his true blue bike wearing his bright yellow suit, his broad brimmed "M" hat and his ever beaming smile. Charlie Doering was a real game day fixture at every home game for many, many years. His presence will sure be missed at The Big House!

I sit in Charlie's fluid mechanics class, from which I began to know some fluids. Charlie was in my PhD thesis committee. He gave me a lot of suggestions for me thesis. Once I asked him questions related to the point vortices problems, he emailed many experts to find more literature and suggestions, I was so moved, and determined to do something interesting in that direction. Thank you, Charlie!

I took my first fluid mechanics class with Charlie back in 2013. Charlie was a great teacher, his lectures were the most colorful and delightful. His use of a retractable physical pointer for his presentations was one of the most unique scenes in the math department. Charlie's positive energy has convinced numerous students that doing math and science is fun.

Charlie was also one of the reasons that kept me going to the AIM seminar every week. The thought that from now on, the...

Charlie enthralled so many Michigan students with his lectures. His mastery of colored chalk was legendary, and his brilliance and kind spirit inspired so many to follow his lead and seek answers to profound questions in mathematics, physics and complex systems. He radiated joy; every time I met him in the hallway I ended with a smile on my face. Thank you, Howard, for posting your wonderful picture of a simply lovely man.

Charlie was a deep thinker who did important work in many areas of science. He also had a huge impact in the lives of many others, via his enthusiasm, energy, cheerfulness, kindness, generosity, goodness of heart, and his concern for others. He was very perceptive, and he had good insights about science and life. His smile and humor were contagious. He will be greatly missed by many.

I remember attending a summer course for graduate students at the Santa Fe Institute in 1985, where Charlie's lectures on white noise and Brownian motion were my first introduction to mathematical modeling using stochastic processes. Charlie opened the door to a fascinating world which I have enjoyed exploring with colleagues and students ever since. Thank you for your inspiration!

The first time I met Charlie, long time ago, it was at a physics conference, during one of my first trips to US. At that time, it was kind of difficult to call overseas, you needed a pay-phone, a bunch of quarters and to go to trough an operator. I could not make it and I needed to call home for family matters. He was kind enough to spontaneously let me make the call on his account. When I offered to pay him back for the call, he refused and we ended up having a beer at the local bar.

I been blessed by having the chance to meet Charlie at conferences. He certainly helped in shaping the career of many young colleagues. He will be missed. My condolences to the family in this sad moment.

I will always remember his enthusiasm and humor. My condolences to the family.
