Charles E. “Pooch” Greathouse, 74, of Spencer, passed away, Friday, February 5, 2021, at CAMC-Memorial Hospital, Charleston.


He was born August 8, 1946 at Spencer, the son of the late Ewell Simmons and Nola Mae Starcher Greathouse. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Roger and Bernard Greathouse.


Pooch retired in 1999, after 32 years of service with Verizon. He was also a member of the CWA, Local No. 2001, Charleston and a West Virginia Army National Guard veteran. Pooch was a Christian and an active charter member of the Faith Baptist Church, Spencer, where he faithfully served as a leader of the Junior Church and as a Deacon. He was a 1963 graduate of Spencer High School and a member of the football team.  Pooch was a former coach of the Monarch Rubber Company Little League baseball team. He was a lifelong resident of Roane County.


His pastimes included farming, fishing and spending time with grandchildren.


Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Beverly S. Epling Greathouse of Spencer; sons and daughters-in-law, Garrison and Lori Greathouse of Poca and Tom and Kerry Greathouse of Franklinton, N.C.; grandchildren, Madison, Macey and Lakin Greathouse; brothers, Fred, Jerry and Terry Greathouse all of Spencer.


A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 10 at the Faith Baptist Church, Spencer with Pastor Justin Simmons and Pastor Rick Perrine officiating. Burial will be in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer.


The visitation will be two hours prior to the funeral.


Please be aware of and abide by the CDC and West Virginia guidelines for the COVID-19 pandemic, which require social distancing and masks to be worn, if you are planning to attend the service or visitation.


Pooch loved and cared for children. In keeping with his concern for the children, memorial donations are preferred to the Faith Christian Academy, 237 Arnoldsburg Road, Spencer, WV 25276.

My friend is gone from us now. And he now is with the LORD he was always the same smiling. I want to extend to Fred his brother my deepest sympathy. Fred we will see Pooch again.

I am so very sorry for the loss of my brother in Christ Pooch Greathouse . Prayers going out to his wife Beverly and their children, grandchildren and all family. He will be missed by all his family and friends and also by his church family. I remember him working and teaching my child, my grandkids and then my great grand daughter. His children at the church will miss him so very much. I myself have been through this and it is a sad time, but I have learned to take each day as it comes and...

I've read a good friend is hard to find, difficult to leave and impossible to forget. Pooch was a GREAT friend and truly impossible to forget. Our thoughts and prayers are with Beverly, their sons Tom and Garrison and their families.
