Mr. Charles Kennedy "Chuck" Emery, 78, of 9216 Oyer Drive, Waynesboro, PA entered into rest at 3:56 P.M. Monday, April 13, 2009 in Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA. Born August 1, 1930 in Pottstown, PA, he was the son of the late Arthur E. Emery and Ruth L. (Kennedy) Emery. He spent his early life in Pottstown. Mr. Emery was a graduate of Pottstown High School with the Class of 1948. He then received his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Millersville State Teacher's College with the Class of 1952. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1954 where he was an ordnance instructor at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. He and his wife of over 53 years, Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" (Snively) Emery, were married June 18, 1955 in Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro. They had lived at their present residence since 1971. Mr. Emery was employed as an Industrial Arts Teacher for Waynesboro School District at West Junior High and later Antietam Junior High, from 1954 until his retirement in 1986. While teaching, he coached football and basketball at Washington Township High School and later at Waynesboro Junior & Senior High Schools. He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro, where he sang in the church choir, had served on church council and was a member of the hand bell choir. He also was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #731, Waynesboro Fish and Game Association, Waynesboro Country Club, South Chapter AARP #2977 and former member of Waynesboro Studio Club, all of Waynesboro and National AARP. Mr. Emery also served on the Board of Directors of Waynesboro Community Concert Association. He was an accomplished Bass singer, singing in area minstrel shows, for the Mercersburg Area Community Chorus, Waynesboro Area Education Association Teachers Productions, and also for weddings and funerals. Mr. Emery was an avid tennis player holding the title, Waynesboro Tennis Champion. His many interests included cooking, hunting, fishing, golf, painting and woodworking. He also enjoyed traveling, telling stories and jokes, as well as time spent with his family. He was an avid Penn State Fan attending most home games. He was a loving husband and father and a devoted grandfather. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Holly E. Carey of Waynesboro and Wendy E. Eigenbrode of Mercersburg, PA; one son, Scott C. Emery of Waynesboro; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and AFS exchange daughter, Adrienne Dumaresq Fawcett of Cape Town, South Africa. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Mabel Beers Emery. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, April 17, 2009 in Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 South Church Street, Waynesboro, with Pastor Thomas Eifert officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro with military graveside honors conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post #1599, Chambersburg, PA. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 P.M., Thursday in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 South Broad Street, Waynesboro. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 South Church Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268.
