Charles Ray Evans Sr., 87, of Lumberton, NC passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on June 9, 2024. He was born on June 18, 1936 to the late George Wesley and Prudie Andrews Evans.
Best known as Ray, "Daddy", or "Papa", he lived a life of service. He served in the National Guard and he was a truck driver for many years before starting Evans Roofing Company in 1980. He was also a Master Mason and Shriner. He enjoyed playing the bagpipes, a token to his Scottish heritage, during his time as a Shriner. After accepting Jesus, he became a servant for Christ. With his wife, Jerri, they served the Lord through mission work and traveling. From Brazil to the Middle East, they went where the Lord called. He served many positions at his home church, West Lumberton Baptist, and attended until his death.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Geraldine “Jerri” Evans; his daughter, Donna Kay Evans; his sister, Jean Hyatt; and special friend, Faye Phillips.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Deborah Evans of Lumberton, Nancy “Beth” Speerli (Randy) of Wilmington, Charles Ray Evans, Jr. (Dawn) of Summerville, SC, and Georgia Thomas (Tim) of Lumberton; his sister, Muriel Knowles (Ken) of Lexington, NC; and his brothers, William “Del” Evans (Linda) of Rocky Mount and Wesley Evans of Lumberton. He was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
A time of visitation will be held Tuesday, June 11th from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm at Floyd Mortuary and Crematory, 809 E. 5th Street, Lumberton, NC.
A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, June 12th at 1:00 pm at West Lumberton Baptist Church, 2320 W. 5th Street, Lumberton, NC. Burial will follow the service at Floyd Memory Gardens, 3720 Old Whiteville Rd, Lumberton, NC. Rev. Rick Foreman will officiate the services.
Flowers are welcome and accepted. Memorials may also be made to West Lumberton Baptist Church.
The family will receive visitors at the home of Ray Evans throughout the week.
