For Leslie A. Whittington, Charles Falkenberg and their two young daughters, the flight to Los Angeles was to have been only the start of their journey. They were headed to Australia, where Whittington, a Georgetown University economist, was to work as a visiting professor for several months at Australian National University.

The family, friends said, had been planning for this adventure for months. The pair had been married 17 years. Their daughters, Zoe and Dana, were 8 and 3.

Remembering Charles on the 20th anniversary of 9/11....

I am visiting Baltimore from NY. I read this family's names and decided to look them up. My heart goes out to their family. RIP

Charles S. Falkenberg & Family

Charles, I recently flew into BWI over DC on an American Airlines flight, and even now my body shakes as I think of you and your family's last moments on earth. I stood for many tearful moments at your benches at the Pentagon Memorial. The heartbreak of reading Dana's name at the first bench reminded me to always tell my two daughetrs how much I love them. My prayers are lifted up for the friends and family you left behind. Much love from Texas

Although I worked with Charlie for a short time at ECOlogic, he left a lasting impression upon me. He was a great mentor. You and your family are not forgotten.

May those who love Charles, his wife Leslie and their daughters, Zoe and Dana, find peace as the anniversary of their passing approaches.

Charlie was my best pal in high school, and for many years beyond. I think of him - and of Leslie, Zoe and Dana so often. Happily, I think of the good times more often than I think of them on an airplane.
Oh, my gosh! Our antics, our joys, our sorrows.
Occasionally I think I recognize their energy in the winds of my life.
Micheline

The memories of this good man and his family are as bright today as they were on that fateful day in 2001. May God bless you, your wife and your beautiful daughters. I hope that those who love you are at least a little comforted by all the words that are written on these pages.

To the family of Charles S. Falkenberg:
Charles gave the ultimate sacrifice and will be held in the hearts of Americans forever. My deepest sympathy to you. We must never forget!
