My sincerest condolences to Charlie's family for their loss. Then Staff Sergeant Flesch ("Sir") was my Basic Training Instructor (TI) at Lackland AFB, April-June, 1968 (I served 1968-72). While my young, just-turned-19 self didn't realize it at the time, that experience would have a profound impact on my life -- multiple college degrees, an invitation to reenter the USAF as a commissioned flight officer, and more. To this day, I credit Charlie for helping me reach a bit farther in life than I...

“Grandfather” was my father in law for many years. He was like Captain of the ship for the Flesch family. Oh he had jokes though! He also had alot of love for both wifes, three children,& he adored all his grand kids. He was a strong values man that I looked up to for most of my life. I will miss his personality. He liked me and I wish I could be there to celebrate his life with you.Stay safe, Lance Smith

Chief Flesch was a guiding light of inspiration for me as a rookie MTI in early 1979. He went out of his way to make me feel like I was an important part of the team, not many senior NCO’s took the time to mentor a Senior Airman rookie like me. His influence motivated me to stay six years my first tour and later came back for another four. Chief Flesch’s spirit, integrity, service, and excellence lives on in all who had the honor of knowing him.

I reported to the 3708 BMTS in December of 1983 for MTI duty. I have always been an avid racquetball player, and soon after arriving met Charlie at the gym. He challenged me to a game, and I thought to myself “go easy on the old guy”. He thoroughly kicked my butt! For the next 25 years we played - as teammates and opponents. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing, and wish we could have had one last game - even if he kicked my butt again! Rest in eternal peace my friend. My deepest...
