Charles A. Johns of Harrisburg, departed this life Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the St. Bernard's Medical Center in Jonesboro, at the age of 79.
He was born May 1, 1933 in Sardis, Mississippi, the son of Walter and Maude Youngblood Johns. Charles married Lois Wilson June 20, 1952 and they enjoyed 61 years together. He was a former deacon and music director for the Greenfield Baptist Church and was currently a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Harrisburg. He was a member and past Master of the Poinsett Masonic Lodge #184 in Harrisburg, a music director for the Eastern Star Arkansas Grand Chapter for several years and a Shriner. He was the Charter President of the Crowley's Ridge Water Association and served on the Board of Directors at Farmer's Supply. He was also on the Board for the Poinsett County 4H and the Drainage District #8. He was a Gideon, an avid deer hunter and enjoyed working.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William Millard Johns and Walter LeRoy Johns and a sister, Cora Dell Jones.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Johns of the home; two sons, David (Becky) Johns and Walter C. "Bud" (Janna) Johns, both of Harrisburg; one brother, Harrison Johns of Harrisburg; two sisters, Edris Sloan of Harrisburg and Elizabeth Fowler of Liberty, S.C; five grandchildren, Kurt (Tonya) Johns, Carrie Johns, Megan (Bobby) New, Lauren (Jeremy) Winkles, and Natalie Johns, and five great grandchildren, Hannah and Emma Johns, Cole New, Reed Morgan and Kain Winkles.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Harrisburg with Rev. Kelly Jones and Rev. Charlie Winters officiating. Interment will follow in the Jonesboro Memorial Park under the direction of Gregg-Weston Funeral Home of Harrisburg.
Friends may visit at the funeral home Monday evening, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Rick Huffman, Randy Dillinger, Gene Crouch, Jim Tom Butler, Dave O'Brien, Matt Fahr, Michael Gillis and Nolan Evans. Honorary Pallbearers will be Charles Cooper, Herb Crites, Wilson Cooper, Bobby New, J.S. Walls, Billy Ray Cooper, Deacons at the First Baptist Church and Men's Sunday School Class, Members of the Poinsett Masonic Lodge, Marvin Krauss, Lloyd Ray Evans and Jack Sanders.
